IBM SPSS Software for your Final Thesis

Your final year thesis or research project is often seen as the culmination of your university studies and is a proof of the extent of knowledge and skills you have acquired. Many students find the thought of writing the assignment intimidating and daunting and many delay it as late as it is possible. However, if you plan your writing and sequence of activities, it shouldn’t be a stressful process and some students even find it challenging and enjoyable. If you break down the thesis paper, it is actually a compilation of a series of write-ups put together to form a long report.

One of the components of a thesis is the ‘Analysis of Findings’. This section requires you to present the findings of your survey, interviews, observations or experiments. It normally includes statistical analyses, graphs, plates and tables.

To enable you to analyze your findings, you need to use certain softwares to calculate the mean, ratio, standard deviation etc. which can help you to interpret the results. Although Microsoft Excel can help you with simple calculations, often a much more complicated software is necessary.

One of the best softwares available is the IBM SPSS software. The SPSS® software platform “offers advanced statistical analysis, a vast library of machine learning algorithms, text analysis, open source entensibility, integration with big data and seamless deployment into applications”. Now you don’t have to attend long training sessions to enable you to use the software. Its “ease of use, flexibility and scalability make it accessible to users of all skill levels. Besides, it is suitable for projects of all sizes and levels of complexity.”

The thing is, to buy the whole software is very expensive and not necessary for students as you will use it only for your thesis and statistics module. The good news is IBM allows you to try the SPSS Statistics for free for 14 days. Now, 14 days may not be enough time for you learn how to use it (there are many video tutorials in YouTube), try it out and practice, and then use it to analyze your findings. So how can you use it for longer period? IBM does not offer any longer period and even if you try to register a trial account again, you will not succeed because IBM can recognise that your computer has used it before, even if you delete it from your program files.

Luckily for students, IBM has partnered with few distributors who offer short-term subscriptions at much lower price. One of the best options is offered by Hearne Software. It offers IBM SPSS Base Grad Pack – basic functions only for €30.00 for 6 months. That should give you enough time to learn, practice and complete your thesis.

Try it. I did and it has served me well.
